Top Professional Musicians Reunite After 38 Years to Perform at Langley HS Jazz Lab Celebration
Readers of Inside Venice’s Jazz Corner and the Inside Venice Facebook page have occasionally seen mention of the incredibly talented musicians who came out of the Langley High School Jazz Laboratory in the 1970s. In remarkable numbers Langley graduates went on to Conservatories and Music Colleges and then became professional musicians.

Two weeks ago graduates from this era gathered in Great Falls, Virginia for day and night concert reunion including a variety of groups and a jam.

A concert today at the General Assembly in New York featured major American musicians and other stars from around the world.
The head of UNESCO said the music symbolizes "freedom."

Live from Stockholm in 1983 on Swedish Television, Stan Getz Quintet with Chet Baker
Jazz on the Tube provided this interesting uptempt recording of Stan Getz and Chet Baker in 1983. The tune is "Airegin" by Sonny Rollins. The two ballad masters hold their own, with Getz the stronger it seems to me. Each had been playing almost 40 years at this point and had been through some hard times. The rhythm section is Jim McNeely on piano, George Mraz on bass and Victor Lewis on drums.

In 1954 Trombonists J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding Recorded Lament, (JJ) and Blues for Trombone, (JJ)
Perhaps the most popular song from the mid 50's collaboration was "It's all Right By Me." But this nine minute audio clip has two originals that really captured their playing at the time. To me it is "real jazz."

You Tube also has K and J on video recording "It's All Right..." almost 30 years later in 1982.

The '54 record has a wonderful rhythm section, Billie Bauer on guitar, Charlie Mingus on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums.

“Five Star” Jazz Concert in Venice: Jim Wellen quintet with singer Debbie Keaton.

This year’s Venice Jazz Series started with a rousing success, Friday night, December 9th. More than 500 listeners applauded every solo and virtually all stayed through a light drizzle to hear the last note. The Mainstreet merchants and the Jazz Club of Sarasota sponsored the free event in Centenial Park as a wonderful way to kick of the Holiday Season.

If you don't know Lennie Tristano's music, now is a time to get acquainted.
This recording was made in 1965 and it speaks for itself in style and harmonic improvisation. Enjoy!

Thanks Mike. (Mike Dowd produces the free Venice Jazz Festival in Venice for the Sarasota Jazz Club.)

Outstanding “Bill Evans” Concert by Canadian Pianist Lorraine DesMarais
I overcame a reluctance to attend a “tribute” concert based on the work of one of the all-time greatest jazz artists, fearing disappointment from anyone interpreting this legendary talent. I am glad I did overcome it.

“Festival Orford” is a performing arts festival specializing in classical music, a few jazz performances and lectures, films, master classes and student recitals at Quebec’s provincial park, Mt. Orford, near Magog.

The performing arts center is beautifu

Festival International de Jazz de Montreal

The Jazz Festival of Montreal, just wrapped up this weekend, drew an estimated 2 million people to Montreal events, (City Estimate). I keep imagining a small festival at the Circus Arena in the future.

More than 100,000 gathered outside in the Place d’Arts to hear U-2, free concert, on the final night. U-2? Jazz? Quibble, quibble, quibble—all right it showcases much more music than Jazz despite the title. Blues, Rock, Latin, African, European, Gospel and more.

15 Year Old Violin Virtuoso Performs in Venice April 16 With Very Strong Group
Jonathan “Jazz” Russell with Bud Leeds Ensemble – April 16, 2011

Young violin sensation Jonathan "Jazz" Russell listened and watched. The event: the 2008 Presidential Inauguration. Days later he scored his own version of what he had seen and heard. 'Twas Jonathan's take on John Williams' arrangement of "Simple Gifts" performed by Anthony McGill, YoYo Ma, Gabriela Montero, and Itzhak Perlman. We've all heard this mid-19th century Shaker hymn by itself or as part of Aaron Copeland

Don Riddell Gets "Standing O" in Venice
Pianist Don Riddell and “his Hepcats” gave a wonderfully pleasing performance Sunday, Dec. 2 at the Harmony House in the Holiday Inn in Venice under the auspices of the Jazz Society of Sarasota. At the end the audience rose in appreciation.

Riddell plays with great energy, often in a style using two handed “block chords”, including stretching the harmonies to the edge of dissonance, but always in a way the audience finds exciting and appropriate. He acknowledges the influence of t

"Sundays at Vic's" - a new CD and DVD.

“Sundays at Vic’s,” a new Boulder, Colorado band grew up around pianist/composer Scott Martin as members began to sit in and eventually evolved into a seven-piece band including vocals, violin, clarinet, vibes, bass and hand-drums. Their sound is acoustic and pleasing and their rhythms evocative of a time when jazz was popular music. Their book ranges from Ellington and Monk to Jobim and even a winning version of “I Want to be Like You” from the Jungle Book.

Dick Hyman and Richard Rodgers
I have been enjoying Dick Hyman’s new album, “Dick Hyman Plays Variations on Richard Rodgers.” At least it is a recent album, 2006 from the Musical Heritage Society, Inc., number 5186061, but with Dick’s amazing creativity he may have done one or more since. Dick is one of the rare pianists who is identifiable in his own style, despite being able to play James P. Johnson, Fats Waller, among many others. More than once I have tuned in a radio show, heard the piano and guessed correctly it was Di

Roberta Gamberini; Freddie Cole--Live from the Montreal Jazz Festival
Roberta Gamberini, displaying exquisite musicianship, a very wide vocal range, and the best performance of “scatting,” I believe since “Bebop Betty Carter” stole the hearts and minds of a sold-out Montreal Jazz Festival Audience at “Club Soda.” Her set ended with a standing ovation from an audience with many young listeners and a minority of “gray heads” like this writer.

I had first heard a record she made on Bob Seymour’s Jazz program on WUSF-89.7, coming in on the middle of a “

Kitt and Mike, More Fully Appreciated--Try them, you'll like them
Kitt and Mike Moran are special--I hope you will go hear them and agree. I have shared my enthusiasm for Kitt and her husband, accompanist, Mike, but I have always felt that
simply describing her as an excellent singer of jazz standards, with special sensitivity to romantic ballads, minimizes her talents. Similarly, Mike is a partner not an accompanist and his own abilities at harmonizing and improvising are easily lost in the focus on Kitt, which he willingly creates.

Grady Tate stirs memories of Joe Williams and the Basie band.
I heard Grady Tate sing the great blues tune, “Nobody Loves Me” from his album, “Grady Tate Live at the Blue Note” and it is terrific. Kudos to Bob Seymour at WUSF 89.7 for presenting a wide variety of artists, known and becoming known.

Tate has a big, powerful, bluesy voice that evokes the late Joe Williams, arguably the best jazz/blues singer of his generation. Williams” version of “Everyday I Have the Blues” with the Basie band became the standard for that song.
