New Holiday Tradition Joins Venice’s “Awesome” Holiday Parade
In a few quiet moments, before the wonderful Holiday Parade- bigger and better than ever, folks gathered at the Gazebo in Centennial Park, for a lighting ceremony for Venice’s new Christmas tree--a cedar that is, over time, expected to soar to 50 or more feet.

A quartet from the Venice Gondolier Chorus sang “Jingle Bells,” “We wish you a Merry Christmas” and other seasonal songs--if the season was more likely to reflect Michigan or Maine, than the mild weather of Venice. Ray Schil

Latest News on Venice Airport Planning.
The City Council, with near unanimity, asked DY consultants to follow up with the FAA after the next airport workshop, December 10.

Not surprisingly, DY found the FAA did not pick up on the proposal for a "B" classification, but was interested in the low "actual count" figures resulting from from the electronic count of flights and classification of planes. This usage summary came as a surprise to them given the earlier, unrealistic projections provided by the MEA consultants whi

Pizza Wars

Responding to a "post" on Venice Florida! dot com, (John Patten's website) complaining about Venice Restaurants, I referred people to some recommendations I have made on this site, and started a lively debate.

There are actually a number of very good pizzas here in town and I enjoy moving around between Amore's (my favorites are the spinach and cheese calzone and the four item stromboli-the small is enough for two of us.) I also have enjoyed the very thi

DY Airport Consultants Not Tri-State listed as a potential partner in Jet Center Lease Acquisition
AGoogle link, provided by an observant researcher indicated a group named Tri State Aviation was listed as linked to the group seeking to take over the Jet Center. Coincidentally, Tri State is also part of a title used by DY Consultants, our airport planners.

When I heard of this possibility yesterday, I called City Manager Isaac Turner and he looked into it immediately.

We have been notified in an email message that DY is not the same Tri-State, has no connection wit

Venice Gondolier Sun and Inside Venice Report on the Council/Airport Directions
It is interesting to compare notes on various reports on Council events. This link to Greg Giles account can be compared with the H-T account posted below which can also be linked to. Inside Venice's story was posted here earlier.

First Reactions to Council Airport Actions are Positive
Initial feedback from people with varying views on the airport, historically, and from area residents has been positive concerning Council’s approval of two major directions for the DY consultants to discuss with the FAA. For full report see next story by scrolling down.

Stakeholders in the airport decisions with whom I have talked, a small sample, feel that the community can get behind efforts to reconstruct runway 4-22 to make it an effective noise abatement runway. The conce

News--City Council Narrows Venice Airport Alternatives for Discussion with FAA
The City Council asked its airport consultants, DY, to discuss two alternatives with the FAA- in the next week, if possible. The DY recommendations, backed by data, provide the Council the strongest support to date for its decision to get additional professional input on developing an airport plan that meets the City's and the FAA’s needs.

Council identified its first priority as a request that the FAA continue to let the airport design reflect its previous status as a “BII” air

Venice Neighborhood Coalitions Merges Into Venice Taxpayers League.
Rosemary Vauzanges sent Inside Venice a news release briefly reporting the new arrangement.

Rosemary, in a phone conversation, said that the membership of the two organizations included many of the same people and having two organizations seemed redundant.

Herb Levine, the long-time president of the Taxpayers League, resigned this year. Website creator John Patten also reported he is no longer a member some weeks ago.

The Taxpayers League has long

Airport--SRQ--“Read All About It!”
In an email to me on November 9th, airport activist Tom Brenner provided a list of things he felt the airport should do, e.g., noise abatement policy, etc. Numbers 1-8 all seemed within the scope of current or future plans. Number 9 gave me some pause, because it reflects a view that must be dealt with during the decisions Council will make prior to submitting a plan to the FAA early next year. Here is the quote from Tom’s letter.

9) Providing the airport consultant with clear and

News on Venice Airport--Clarifying Misunderstandings for the Public
I think it will be helpful to provide accurate information to the public about two related issues: The reported City interest in purchasing the jet center lease and the Jet Center proposal to build four or more hangars.

PART I. Purchasing the Jet Center Lease.

. The City Council has never made an offer of any kind to purchase the Jet Center. No vote to do so has even been presented. Citizens proposed the idea and at least one Council member expressed interest.

Election Story Stimulates Replies, Significant Discussion.
If you have not kept up with the Comments on the Good News-Bad News election story, below, I think you will find them interesting.Council has really fulfilled its major promises. 1. more citizen involvement . 2. no more acceptance of funds from special interests with pleadings before Council . 3. preserving the nature of the City through comp planing. 4. Approving zoning, etc. for multi-family, single family, commercial and hotels,--only the recession kept that from happening. 5. Ending

Inside A Good News-Bad News “Party”
Running for office is like being the pitcher in a baseball game, or quarterback. If you win, you are a “hero,” if you lose, you are a “bum,” or at least you feel the pain and inevitable isolation. Even surrounded by friends who care for you, your inner self is vulnerable and exposed.

Last night at the Left Coast Oyster Bar, the election results came so quickly after the polls closed, that I needed to double check. Website creator John Patten announced the win for Jim Bennett

Herald Tribune Columnist Eric Ernst on Venice Comp. Plan
"In some ways, Venice is trying to set a pace the rest of the state might want to emulate, and it appears the DCA, with a few exceptions, does not object."

Eric Ernst is the latest person with a view of the plan from a citizen's point of view to see value in the plan, joining environmentalists, neighborhood organizations, citizens who participated in the Envision Venice process and average citizens who want to preserve the magic of Venice.

Critics, on the other hand
