Eric Ernst's Column on the Cost of Growth Should Be Required Reading For Council, City/County Staff
Eric Ernst of the Herald Tribune provides facts on the cost of development, providing some information about Northport and Sarasota County identifying a website and studies. Venice figures are not specified, but the principle is obviously true.

Ernst writes, "Residential construction may have slowed, but before any city or county commissioners permit another subdivision, they should take a look at a new website.

It's called priceofsprawl.com."

City Council and Economic Committee Meet on Airport
The City Council and the City’s volunteer Economic Committee met today to hear a presentation from Airport Administrator Chris Rozansky and to consider directions for enhancing the economic impact of the airport.

The meeting served primarily to afford the groups and citizens in attendance to think about the airport and its potential for additional economic gain to the airport enterprise fund, (which supports all airport operations and capital projects), and the general benefit to th

Here's A Golden Oldie: Anita O'Day with Stan Kenton in 1945.
This track is mostly a glimpse into the past, the fidelity is low, but having heard the post-war Kenton Band, and June Christy, who replaced O'Day as the "girl singer" it provides a real contrast to the recordings of the next decade. Enjoy

Walter Hake, a Pilot Who Understands the Relationship Between Community and Airport
Walter Hake, a World War II pilot was one of a few voices of sanity during the long struggle to develop an airport plan that respects the non-aviation and aviation-interested citizens of Venice.

Hake and others with like views, the Airport Tenants Union, saw things very differently than VASI, Nadel, Dan Boone, and the earlier city government officials who favored airport special interests over all else.

Traveler's Dairy--Storm at Sea
(This is the final entry of this Traveler's Diary. Hope you enjoyed it.)

From Cadiz, the Nieuw Amsterdam, was scheduled to head for Funchal, Madeira where I was primed to buy some Madeira, my dear. (Thanks to Tom Lehrer, comic, songwriter and Harvard professor who popularized the song lyric phrase, “Have some Madeira, ma dear.”)

The wind was up and the ocean was choppy, with waves from hither and yon, “troubled seas.” With the stabilizers out, the motion of the shi

Traveler’s Diary—The Oldest City on the Iberian Peninsula.
Cadiz, Spain, outside the Straits of Gibraltor, on the Atlantic side, is often cited as the oldest continuously-occupied settlement on the entire Iberian Peninsula, (e.g. Portugal, too.) Cadiz has been an important port for the Spanish Navy for centuries, being built on a peninsula affording a large sheltered port.
The old city of Cadiz, was within walls, many still standing, and provides a wonderful walking ground. Narrow, pedestrian-friendly streets, join larger squares and historical

Traveler's Diary, Corfu, Greece and Messina, Sicily
Corfu.

Having visited the Aegean Greece on several occasions, we looked forward to the Adriatic Island, Corfu. The port city is located approximately half way between the north and south ends of a 20 some mile island and has the traditional Greek charm, tavernas and port-side view and promenades.

The downtown includes streets limited to pedestrians, and others so narrow as to deter traffic. The "walking" streets, paved flat stones, add delight to shopping and sitting in

Traveler's Diary--Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik, October 28, 2011

The independent State of Dubrovnik was the first to recognize the independent United States of America. In 1991 and 1992 the United States, under President Clinton, and NATO allies intervened to stop what was widely seen as Genocide at the hands of the Serbian army led my Slobodan Milosovic. The final peace resulted in the separation of Yugoslovia
into separate states including Croatia which includes the Dalmation Coast, of which the ancient walled

Traveler's Diary, 2011--The Beginning, Not Without Pain
In 1999-2000 Peggy and I had the joy of sailing around the world in 120 days. I posted a series of brief reports on the journey for the Sarasota Herald Tribune. This recent trip, ended today, while of less epic proportions, sixteen days, brought the urge to share a bit of the experience. Bon Voyage for the interested.

Advice to travelers: Do not lose, have stolen, or have a "mysterious. disappearance" of your passport 48 hours before an inter
