Venice, Florida-- News and Notes
Circus Arena
A group of citizens, stimulated by world-famous trapeze artist, Tito Gaona has formed to try to save, rehabilitate and plan future operations for the old Ringling Circus Arena on the Airport property.
In our Priority Setting meeting earlier this spring, Council decided to tear down the arena, now in very poor repair, after waiting, unsuccessfully, in recent years for a development proposal that woud use the property and generate additional support for airport o

Venice preserves Nolen's dream
Published by the Herald Tribune, Wednesday, March 24.
This past week the Herald-Tribune has twice published material that recognizes the value of the comprehensive planning values Venice is now completing.
The first was a news story reporting that PBS sees Venice as a model for other Florida cities (and elsewhere). The second is a column by Eric Ernst that points out that the new comprehensive plan preserves the best of Venice, maintains its small-town charm, he

"It's All About Preserving Venice--Its Charm, Its Quality of Life and its Identity"
This week the Sarasota Herald Tribune has published two articles that have affirmed the direction of the City in preserving the John Nolen legacy which has made this City unique and wonderful. One is Eric Ernst's column linked below and the other is the story on PBS seeing Venice's development policies as a model for the State's communities, (also on this website.)
When I decided to enter politics for the first time at age 76, it was because I feared that the City's plans for growth

Venice Leadership Plans For The City Affirmed by PBS
In 2007 and in the two elections since the voters of Venice have affirmed they want to preserve Venice and at least six members of the current City Council have supported the voters' wishes.
Our developing plan, restricts excess height and density leading to crowding, buildings blocking light, less open space, etc. We expect the State will agree to its basic directions as the County already has.
PBS sees the beauty and uniqueness of Venice, yet we have had to fight tho

Meetings With Congressional Staff Were Productive and Positive.
City Manager Isaac Turner and I met this week in Washington with a number of Congressional Staff Members, acting on behalf of their “principals” to discuss items the Council had approved asking for federal funding, possible funding for future requests, e.g., beach renourishment, and also the City’s approved position concerning the soon to be submitted Airport Master Plan.
This follows our participation with Representative John Mica, ranking minority member on the Transportation C

SCHOOLS, COMMUNITY WIN!
Is this a great County or What? Good schools mean good future for all--from infants to grandparents, homeowners and business. Congratulations to all who voted "Yes," to those who led the efforts, and to the teachers and students who deserved our support.

After a troubling period of no response the Florida emergency management agency, has written to FEMA in Atlanta asking them to do an appraisal of the impact of Chinese drywall on Florida residents.

Venice Elementary "Dog Washer " Inventor Wins Regional Honor
In December I had the pleasure of being a judge in the Venice Elementary School Science Fair and wrote in a December 4 posting, (click on December 2009 button on right.)
In the posting, without naming children as I did not have permission, I commented on an ingenious dog washer and other very interesting projects. A number of children won regional notice for their science projects. Among the other worthies was John Hazelton of "Doggy Wash" fame.

"OLD FLORIDA"--NOW SHOWING IN VENICE!
Venice Myakka Park, at the east end of Laurel Road, will take you back to the natural look that Hollywood captured for movies including part of Johnny Weissmuller's "Tarzan."
One of the "promises" of the campaign in 2007 by Ernie Zavodnyik, Sue Lang and me, was that we would expand and preserve Venice's natural beauty, and it has been embraced by Council members elected since then. More new parks are under construction and in planning stages.
The park has an acc

The Olympics--The other guys (and women).
One of the joys of the Olympics is the individual performance of the athletes. While I expect no one does not enjoy the successes of athletes from his or her native country, there is also the joy at watching a great performance by any individual.
To recognize these achievements is to value the Olympic ideals.
