Traveler's Journal finds "Duck Heaven"
Traveler’s Journal

June 29, 2007

I have discovered three couples from Venice within about 25 miles, and who knows how many others there may be in Newport, Vermont and the “Eastern Townships” of Quebec.

If you are headed this way, put Knowlton, or Lac Brome, on your itinerary if you love Duck, prepared in the traditional French manner. Knowlton was a primarily English settlement, one of many peopled, at least in part, by loyalists to King George III. Over t

PLANNING COMMISSION NEEDS RENEWAL, DIVERSE VIEWS
At the last meeting of the Planning Commission two hotels were approved.

Both were granted additional height above the basic zoning.

The Wasserman project on Avenida del Circo will be taller than the nearby homes, condominiums, commercial buildings, church, and the Village On The Isle.

Downtown, the Miller project between Tampa and East Venice Avenue will exceed the new standards for height and density. Although the commercial mixed unit

Long Range Plan Flawed. Golden Beach "Transitional"
To: Mayor and Council Members:

It seems to me that the city administration will not be satisfied until Golden Beach becomes a transient, noisy, tourist neighborhood.
First, delay in correcting an ordinance which could have prevented short term rentals in the neighborhood. Then requesting we hire a lawyer ($1400 +) to try to enforce a faulty ordinance.
Secondly, continued disregard of neighborhood input on the Airport Master Plan. No one to date has explain

Where to Find Joe Williams and Count Basie
Since writing about Joe Williams appearing with the Basie band at a New York benefit, singing, “Every Day (I Have The Blues), I have been asked where a recorded version might be found.

Verve 835 329-2, Compact Jazz, “Count Basie and Joe Williams” contains Every Day and a very nice sampling of the band and Williams in a number of different moods.

The Basie band on the remastered disc, (AAD), is in absolutely top form. When someone looks up the word “swinging” this ba

Citizens for Sensible Growth Nears Petition Goal
Dear Friends:

Great news! We are fast approaching CSG’s goal of 12, 500 signed, certified (by supervisor of elections) sets of sensible growth petitions needed to place our super majority/higher standards and our “voter approval required” county charter amendments on the ballot. Based on what we have turned in so far and expected rejection rates on those now being counted, we already have about 10,200 certified sets of petitions. This includes the batches of petitions

Traveler's Journal Discovers Poutine!

Last year, after a number of years vacationing in Quebec province I abandoned “good judgment” and sampled a local favorite dish, “Poutine.”

Poutine, in its classic form, consists of French fries and chunks of mild, white cheese curds, all topped by brown gravy. It is ubiquitous, not just in informal restaurants, where you might find variants with Italian tomato sauce, for example, but in higher cuisine establishments where it is suitably and expensively, “gussied up.” Some l

Black Memo on Airport Follows Inside Venice Questions
On May 30,2007 in a column in the Venice Gondolier and on this site, Inside Venice askedthe questions, several of which are posted below as Issue 1-3.They were unresolved issues about the airport. John Patten on www.Venicefl.com.secured a copy of City Manager Marty Black's June 11th comments to the city council which had not been available electronically and posted them on his website this week. Black's comments follow the May 30th questions. The point is that the planning process has been

Miller Applies For 100 Unit Density and 80 Foot Heights at June 19 Planning Commission Meeting
Council’s Legacy at Stake.

Despite limitations in the Commercial Mixed Use zoning regulations of 18 units per acre density and height limitations of 35 feet, developer Michael Miller and two partners are asking the city to rezone his property between Tampa and E.Venice Avenues for 100 rentable units per acre and to allow him to build four 80 foot towers and another slightly smaller fifth building in the project newly renamed “Tra Ponti.”

HOTELIERS HAVE RESERVATIONS
PROPOSED AIRPORT HOTEL

“It will put us out of business,” said a worried spokesperson for one of the nicest lodgings in town, one with an excellent location. “This has been the poorest season we have had in years.”

Like others questioned, this manager did not want to be quoted. When I asked why not, I received two answers: “We don’t need this kind of publicity,” and “I have to live with these people.”

Several hotels and motels confirmed this ha

Black suggests answers to questions needed re: airport, Council delays approval of plan
The City Council on June 12, 2007 delayed acceptance of the airport plan after city manager Marty Black cited several remaining questions, including specifically those posed by this column as well as many raised by citizens, specifically runway length and specific impact on the golf course. County Commission protests that Venice is not complying with Joint Planning Agreement.
Despite an overwhelming vote of citizens of Sarasota County, (70 percent) and the City of Venice (69 percent),favoring involving the county in discussions of land use as specified in a joint planning agreement, Venice officials have resisted reasonable consultation with the county, resulting in a public disagreement.

This is not surprising considering that Mayor Hammett, (as reported in an earlier Inside Venice posting) asked the city attorney to look into whether the county's ef
